Education
There can be no effective response to gang violence until our community and the media understand and develop an awareness of issues related to gangs.

For this reason, the Calgary Police Service has introduced a multi-level education campaign aimed at raising community and media awareness.

Raising Public Awareness

Police officers are working to inform Calgarians about the gang problem in Calgary, and explaining what is being done to fight it.

We host open-house presentations throughout the city where you can come to learn more, raise your concerns and get answers to any questions you may have. We can also make personalized presentations to interested schools or community groups. For information, please contact the Community Liaison Officer at your local Police District.

In addition, we have introduced a public awareness program that includes an advertising campaign to convince youth that belonging to a gang is a dead-end lifestyle. (This website is part of this initiative.)

Informing the Media

We are working very closely with mainstream newspapers, television and radio stations as well as community newsletters to make sure the public gets the most current, correct information.

The Calgary Police Service regularly shares information and statistics on arrests, charges and seizures in gang-related press releases. We also host workshops to help give members of the media and stakeholders a better understanding of how gangs work, and what the police are doing about the problem.
